Chapter Ten

Shooting Stars

“Hello, niece.” Nesrin bared her teeth at Evony. “How was your wedding?” she added with a snigger. Evony glared back at her aunt.

Soren clasped Evony’s hand and whispered, “Ignore her; she is just trying to get a reaction out of you.”

Evony frowned and looked like she wanted to say something, but after a long moment turned away from the smirking Nesrin and focused her attention on Polaris, who dismissed the group.

“My guests, please retire to your chamber to rest – we will collect you for the ceremony later.”

They were led from the room, with the back of Beatrice’s neck prickling as she walked out. Beatrice stopped to turn her head, and met Nesrin’s gleaming eyes across the room. She hurried to catch up with the rest of the group, but was distracted by voices coming from an alcove down the corridor.

“Mother, I do not want to rule. Caeruleus has returned – it is for him,” a soft voice was saying urgently.

“You were born and raised at Inlustris; it should be yours!” a cold, high voice argued back.

Beatrice slowed her steps to listen, her heart pounding. Maybe this was Caeruleus’ way out.

“Nesrin has promised—” Astara broke off. “Is someone there?”

Beatrice ran as fast as she could around the corner of the corridor, catching up with the others.

“There you are,” Martha said as Beatrice slid into step beside her. “What’s wrong?” she asked, noticing her flushed cheeks.

“Nesrin’s up to something,” Beatrice hissed back, but glancing at the unicorn guards, she didn’t risk saying any more.

Once they were back in their chamber, Martha asked, “What do you think Nesrin is up to?”

Beatrice quickly relayed what she had overheard as the others crowded around her.

“Astara specifically said that Nesrin had promised to do something?” Evony asked, her face white.

Beatrice nodded. “I don’t know what, though – they stopped talking because Astara heard something and I didn’t want to get caught listening.”

“She must be planning to help Astara get Nova on the throne, but why? Why would she risk the wrath of Polaris after he helped her return to her fairy form?” Doran said, twisting his long beard thoughtfully.

“Should we say something?” Felicity asked, looking at Evony.

“Would Polaris believe us? He already knows we are at odds with Nesrin – and besides, this might be Caeruleus’ chance to return to Bloomsville,” Soren answered as Evony weighed up the options.

Beatrice nodded. “That’s exactly what I thought. Maybe we should let it play out and see what happens. If Nova is recognised as the next ruler, there will be no need for Caeruleus to stay.”

“But what about Nova?” Martha asked with empathy. “What if she doesn’t want to rule?”

“But neither does Caeruleus,” Beatrice argued, her cheeks flushing again, this time in anger. “He doesn’t belong here. At least this is Nova’s home.”

Martha rubbed Beatrice’s arm placatingly. “You’re right, but I don’t like anyone to be forced into doing something they don’t want to do,” she explained.

“I’d love to help Nova too, but my loyalty is with Caeruleus,” Beatrice said with a helpless shrug.
